The Greatest Showman: Movie Review

The Greatest Showman (2017), a movie musical that's about the historical figure, P.T Barnum. The film directed by Michael Gracey.  It also stars newcomer Keala Settle, whose song, "This is Me" has been a hit on the several music charts. This film has become a favorite of many people. Not because of the story itself but also because of the music that's involved.

The film begins with P.T Barnum (Hugh Jackman) as a young boy, son of a tailor man. Thirsty for success and gifted at being innovative, as a grownup, Barnum opens a wax museum. With the wax museum not making enough income, Barnum comes up with an idea to start a show. The show includes extraordinary and unique looking people. Barnum soon comes upon the playwriter, Phillip Carlyle (Zac Efron), who he hires to help out with the circus. The Barnum and the troupe are soon invited to London to perform in front of the queen.  This is when Phillip introduces to Jenny Lind (Rebecca Ferguson), an opera singer, to Barnum. Soon, Barnum gets the idea to have Jenny travel the United States singing in a theater back.  After the first performance, back home in the United States, Barnum decides to take Jenny Lind on tour around the United States. Leaving Phillip to be in charge of the show. Barnum comes back home after Jenny and he almost falls in love. This is when the protesting of the troupe and the circus reached its peak. The protesters put the building on fire. From here on, everything that Barnum had built continued to fall down. He lost the building, his wife, Charity (Michelle Williams) goes back to her parent's house. Barnum and his family lost their home as well. This is when Barnum sings the song From Now On. He then runs back to his wife to apologize for how he had been acting. Barnum then tries to get the show back on its feet.  The only way he was able to do that was by taking Phillip's money that he had put back. The movie ends with a show taking place in a tent, which when Barnum passes the mantel to Phillip. The last scene of the movie is of Barnum and Charity watching their little girl at her ballet recital.

My view of this film is definitely that of a positive note. The plot of the film was definitely great and I loved that it had more than one storyline to follow. The only thing I would have changed about it is to have made it a little bit longer. It would have given filmmakers a chance to give more background info on characters in the film. Also, it could have brought in some of the other important things about P.T Barnum. The actors and actresses in the movie did an amazing job within the film. I definitely enjoyed the fact that the film rating is PG family oriented.

The music of the film written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The hype that it made about the film was because of the music that can be heard in this film. My personal thoughts on the music are that the songs throughout the film were all done well. I loved the soundtrack to this movie. Since its release, I have listened to the soundtrack almost every day.

The film has an incredible cast. The main character P.T Barnum is Hugh Jackman. Jackman portrays Barnum well throughout the movie. One can even tell how much Jackman enjoys singing, dancing and acting within this film. One well-known actor in the film is Zac Efron. It is exciting to see him return to his routes. He did an excellent job acting, singing and dancing throughout the film. Other amazing talented actors within the film are  Michelle Williams and Rebecca Ferguson. Each did a splendid job portraying there characters. One newcomer to movies in theaters is Zendaya. Many surprised by her performance throughout the film. She definitely is someone to keep an eye on in the future.

The film has a message within the movie that is quite obvious. It is one of my favorite things about this particular movie. The idea is to not give up on your dreams, no matter what.  understands you. It also leaves a feeling of hope and determination. It teaches to not get caught up in the non-important things but to remember those who are there for you.
